Aural Skills: How Hearing Makes Doing and Seeing Work. Teaching music students to listen to themselves is crucial for their own success. Yet students who mostly “play by ear” often struggle with technique, sightreading, and basic practice skills. How does effective teaching balance the necessity of listening with the need for doing and seeing? Far from “playing by ear,” students who can accurately remember, identify, analyze, and manipulate sounds are posed to excel at technique, sightreading, practicing, and a host of other functional skills. This interactive workshop explores ways to teach ear training less as a disconnected topic and more as a fundamental practice technique.

William Perry will be presenting Improvisation 101: A Step-By-Step for Everyone. This workshop explores a wide range of topics around teaching improvisation in piano lessons. It addresses a number of questions: Why should we use improvisation in our lessons? How do we begin to teach improvisation, especially if we have no experience? How do we tailor our improvisation exercises to varying levels? What are the resources available? This workshop not only examines these common questions but guides you through an easy 3-step process that can be used with your students of all levels, whether you’ve ever improvised or not. This process is demonstrated live with varied applications for different levels of students and highlights how easy it is to fit improvisation into your lesson plans. There will also be a sample exercise for you to take home that you can use immediately in your lessons. This is an interactive workshop, so come prepared to make music!
- Pianist William Perry is an active classical, jazz and popular music performer as well as an instructor. In his teaching, William uses improvisation to introduce core concepts related to piano playing, which helps students gain a well-rounded view of music making and to explore the piano from a different perspective. William received a Master’s degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from Florida State University, studying under Dr. Joel Hastings and Dr. Diana Dumlavwalla. He was a Piano Scholar and William E. Duckwitz award winner at Stetson University, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance, studying under Dr. Michael Rickman. In addition to his performances throughout Florida as a classical and jazz musician, William has also performed in Ireland, Czech Republic, France, Italy and Hawaii. An active member of MTNA and FSMTA, William currently serves as the President of Mid-State Music Teachers Association in Tampa and has presented and performed at numerous state conferences. He founded and served as president for the MTNA collegiate chapters of Stetson University and Florida State University.
